Preventable Deaths That Will Happen Again

Not only could the recent bicyclist deaths on St. Claude have been prevented-we will continue to witness more bicyclist deaths until New Orleans establishes an interconnected grid of protected bike lanes throughout the city.

WDSU journalist Jonah Gilmore covered yesterday’s City Council resolution to endorse the state's study to implement a separated bike lane on St. Claude Ave. We appreciate the Council supporting the states initiative. Now, we as a city need to exemplify to the state what we want by building the infrastructure we want them to implement on our own city streets.

We are trained to think of City Hall when we think of "the city." However, we are the city, and planning should not be implemented without our consent. You're correct in your analysis that operatives in City Hall, the state, and the federal government are controlled by those that give them campaign dollars.

However, those that use their wealth to control the economy and plan our infrastructure are in the minority. We have even more power when we organize and use our collective voices to steer decisions made on our behalf—decisions for the majority of the population and the wellbeing of the planet.

Together, we can make a difference! Join our grassroots organizing to be a part of it.

Ride with us, volunteer, or donate!

Our streets must be decommodified and made truly public, with equitable and safe access for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers alike.
